TOFU, MOFU and BOFUFunnel stages
TOFU, MOFU, BOFU are short for top of the funnel, middle of the funnel and bottom of the funnel. They split the buyer journey into three stages: becoming aware of a problem, comparing ways to solve it, and choosing a vendor. Marketing and sales teams use them to match content, outreach and metrics to where each buyer is.
TOFU, MOFU, BOFU compared
| TOFU | MOFU | BOFU | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer's question | Why do I have this problem? | How do others solve it? | Why this vendor, and why now? |
| Content | Posts, guides, research | Case studies, webinars, tools | Demos, pricing, proposals |
| Outbound play | A point of view in the first touch | Proof that fits their situation | A meeting with a clear next step |
| Main metric | Reach in the right audience | Engaged accounts and MQLs | Meetings, SQLs, pipeline |
The stages describe the buyer's state of mind, not your channels. A cold email can reach someone who is already choosing a vendor, and a webinar can attract someone who just learned the problem exists. In B2B, several people in the same account can also sit at different stages at the same time.
Top of the funnel (TOFU)
At the top, buyers are noticing a problem, often before they would call it one. The job is to be useful and memorable to the right audience, not to capture every email address. Good TOFU content teaches something: original research, a clear point of view, a free tool someone can use the same day. Our guide to demand generation in B2B explains why this works as a steady system of small plays rather than one big campaign.
- Original research with numbers buyers can quote.
- Short posts with a clear opinion on a problem your buyers have.
- Free tools that give an instant answer, such as a calculator or a checklist.
Middle of the funnel (MOFU)
In the middle, buyers know the problem and are comparing approaches: build or buy, a tool or a service, one method or another. They want proof and specifics. Case studies, comparison pages, calculators and webinars with real examples work here. This is where lead scoring and nurturing do most of their work, and where marketing decides which leads become marketing qualified leads.
- Show results from companies like theirs, with the numbers and how they were measured.
- Answer the comparison questions directly, including when you are not the right choice.
- Offer a tool or an assessment that gives a useful answer about their own situation.
Bottom of the funnel (BOFU)
At the bottom, the buyer is choosing. Content gets specific: pricing, implementation plans, security answers, references. Sales takes over with discovery calls, demos and proposals, and the metric that matters is qualified pipeline, not traffic. Outbound often lands here directly, by reaching a buyer who is already looking. Our guide to B2B appointment generation explains why a captured contact and a booked meeting are two different jobs.
Speed matters at this stage. In the Growth Cab show rate study of 1,380 B2B meetings booked by cold calling, meetings held 0 to 2 days after booking took place 85.4% of the time, against 58.5% for meetings more than 30 days out. The details are in the show rate study.
