How to use the LinkedIn post preview
- Write your post in the box, or paste a draft over the example. Your name, headline and photo can be changed too.
- Pick Desktop, Tablet or Mobile, and Light or Dark, to see the post the way each reader will.
- Read the highlighted text in the editor. It is exactly what shows before …more on the device you picked.
- Select words to make them bold or italic, or select lines to turn them into a list. The smiley button adds emoji where your cursor is, and the spacing button puts one blank line between paragraphs or removes them.
- Add images, a PDF or a video to see the full post with its media. The files never leave your browser.
- Click Copy post and paste it into LinkedIn, or copy a share link to send the draft to a colleague for review.
Where LinkedIn cuts your post with …more
LinkedIn does not publish where …more appears. Third-party measurements agree on two limits, and the post is cut at whichever comes first: three lines of text, with blank lines counting as lines, or a number of characters.
Where LinkedIn shows …more, from third-party measurements read October 12, 2026| Device | Shown before …more | Source |
|---|
| Desktop feed | About 3 lines or 210 characters | AuthoredUp, Post Formatter |
|---|
| Phone app | About 3 lines or 140 characters | AuthoredUp, Post Formatter, Hootsuite |
|---|
| Whole post | Up to 3,000 characters | LinkedIn Help |
|---|
Most previewers count characters. This one measures lines. It sets your text in the font LinkedIn uses, at the real width of the feed, finds the last word that fits in three lines next to …more, then applies the character limit. Long words, emoji and blank lines move the cut exactly as they do on LinkedIn.
What the preview shows
- Desktop, tablet and phone layouts, in light and dark mode. Desktop and phone use LinkedIn’s real widths; tablet is an approximation.
- The highlighted part of your draft that people read before they decide to tap …more.
- Images in the same grids the feed uses, from one image to a set with a +N tile, a PDF document with its real pages, and video.
- Hashtags and links in blue, reactions, comments and reposts if you want them, and the time of posting.
- Bold, italic and lists survive when you paste a draft from Google Docs, Notion or a web page, so you do not have to style it again.
- Three checks: the 3,000-character limit, whether your first line survives the phone cut, and how much of the post uses styled letters.
Write the first three lines for the phone
The phone app cuts your post earliest. Write the hook so it reads complete in the first line, keep it short enough to survive the phone limit, and put the proof right after it.
- One idea per line. A sentence that wraps three times on a phone takes the whole preview.
- Remember that a blank line uses one of the three preview lines.
- Bold the hook and nothing else. Styled letters are look-alike symbols that screen readers handle badly.
- Check the phone preview last, after every edit to the opening.

Frequently asked questions
How do I preview a LinkedIn post before posting?
Paste your draft into the editor above and pick a device. The preview shows the post as it appears in the LinkedIn feed, with your name, headline and photo, the cut where …more appears, and any images, PDF or video you add.
How many characters show before see more on LinkedIn?
About 210 characters on desktop and about 140 on the phone app, or three lines, whichever comes first, according to third-party measurements by AuthoredUp and Post Formatter. LinkedIn does not publish the number. Blank lines count as lines.
Why does my post look different on mobile and desktop?
The phone column is narrower, so the same text wraps into more lines and the character limit is lower. A hook that fits on desktop can be cut in half on a phone. Switch the preview to Mobile to check it.
Can I preview a LinkedIn carousel or PDF post?
Yes. Click PDF, pick your file and the preview shows it as a document post with its real pages and arrows to flip through them. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
Is the LinkedIn post preview free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. Your text is saved only in your own browser, and images, PDFs and videos are never uploaded. A share link carries the text in the link itself, not on our servers.
