No. ChatGPT has no pause button for Plus, Pro or Go. OpenAI's help pages offer other moves: cancel and keep paid features until the end of the billing period, switch to a cheaper plan at your next renewal, or undo a scheduled cancellation before the period ends. Your chats stay in your account either way.
People keep landing on my Pro 200 article with this question, so here is the full answer: the steps for the web, iPhone and Android, the one place a real pause can exist, and the refund rules that decide whether a month off costs you anything. Every fact comes from OpenAI and Google help pages I read on October 12, 2026.
- ChatGPT's own billing settings have no pause option.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before your billing date. Paid features stay until the period ends.
- A move from Pro or Plus to Go starts at the end of your billing cycle, with no refund for the current month.
- Google Play lets some apps pause payments for up to three months. Check your ChatGPT subscription there.

Is There a Pause Button for ChatGPT Plus or Pro?
No. OpenAI's pages on cancelling and on the Pro plans describe three actions: cancel, change plan and undo a scheduled cancellation. None of them mentions a pause. The top results I checked on October 12 agree, apart from two blogs that claim an Android pause and cite no source.
The pause you may have read about is something else. On September 10, 2026 OpenAI stopped selling new Pro 200 subscriptions, then reopened them on September 29. In 2023 it froze new Plus sign-ups for a while. Both were sales freezes on OpenAI's side. Neither let existing subscribers stop paying.
Three Ways to Take a Month Off Without Losing Your Chats
- Cancel and come back later. Cancelling stops the next renewal and you keep paid features until the end of the billing period. Your chats stay saved, and you can subscribe again whenever you want.
- Switch to a cheaper plan. Moving from Pro or Plus to Go takes effect at the end of your billing cycle, then you pay the Go rate. OpenAI does not refund the month you are in.
- Use Google Play's pause if you see it. Some apps on Google Play let subscribers pause payments for one week up to three months. If you pay through Google Play, open your subscriptions, select ChatGPT and look for Pause payments under Manage.
The Google Play option is the only real pause, and I could not confirm that OpenAI turns it on for ChatGPT. Google says it is up to each app. While a subscription is paused you have no access to the paid plan and pay nothing, and you can resume at any time.
Changed your mind after cancelling? OpenAI says a scheduled cancellation does not end the plan right away. You keep access until the end of the billing period and can undo the cancellation in your billing settings before that date.
How to Cancel ChatGPT on the Web, iPhone and Android
Cancel on the platform that bills you. A plan bought on chatgpt.com does not appear in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions, and uninstalling the app leaves the plan running.
- Web: open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Billing, and under Cancel plan select Cancel.
- iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription, and confirm.
- Android: open the Google Play Store app, then Subscriptions, then ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription.
- ChatGPT Business: Workspace settings, then Billing, then Manage plan, then Cancel subscription. If you cannot see Billing, ask the workspace owner.
Do it at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Inside that window the next charge may already be processed. Then check the platform that bills you and make sure the plan no longer shows a renewal.
What Happens to Your Chats When You Cancel?
They stay. OpenAI keeps regular and archived chats saved to your account until you delete them, and cancelling a plan deletes nothing. You also do not need to delete your account to stop the charges. When the paid period ends, the account stays open and you can keep using ChatGPT's free features.
Deleting your account is a different and permanent move. It cancels a plan billed directly by ChatGPT, but it does not cancel a subscription bought through Apple. If you pay through Apple or Google Play, cancel the store subscription first.
Can You Get a Refund for the Month?
Usually no. OpenAI says payments are generally non-refundable, and that forgetting to cancel, an accidental purchase or a plan change does not qualify on its own. For an unused individual plan, a discretionary refund may be possible if you ask within seven days of the charge.
Some readers have more rights. In the EU, the UK and Turkey you get a prorated refund if you cancel within 14 days of purchase. In South Korea you get a full refund within seven days if you have not used the service. Apple refunds App Store purchases, and OpenAI Support handles web and Google Play ones.
Taking a Break From Pro 200? Check the October 29 Date
If you had an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from September 22 to 10 a.m. Pacific on September 29, 2026, you keep the old allowance through October 29 while the plan stays active. If it ends and you subscribe again on the same account, the same rule applies. After October 29 every Pro 200 plan runs on the lower allowance at the same $200 a month.

My Rule for a Quiet Month
If you will be away for a month, cancel a few days before the renewal and subscribe again when you are back. Your chats stay where they are and you skip a full charge. If you will only use ChatGPT lightly for a while, a cheaper plan keeps paid features at a lower price.
