Claude Code for marketing means using Anthropic's AI agent to build small tools that do real marketing work: drafting posts, building lead lists, checking cold emails, writing call recaps. You describe each job in plain English. Claude Code writes the code, runs it and follows your rules. You do not need to know how to program.
On October 2, 2026, I posted on LinkedIn that 9 AI agents run my agency's GTM, from the first post to the signed client. I studied philosophy. I built all 9 with Claude Code this year, and every rule they follow is written in plain English. This is the long version: what each agent does, where a person still signs off, and which one I would build first.
- Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic tool. It reads files, edits them and runs commands, in the terminal, the desktop app, the browser or an IDE.
- For marketing, the asset you build is a set of rules: who the buyer is, how you sound, what must never happen.
- Our 9 agents cover content, blog, lead lists, outreach, email checks, cold call notes, recaps, pipeline and onboarding.
- Every agent that talks to a client stops at a draft or an approval step. The ones that only read can run alone.
- Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan, from $17 a month on Pro with annual billing.

What Is Claude Code for Marketing, in Plain Terms?
Claude Code is an AI agent that works on your computer's files. Anthropic describes it as a tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and connects to your tools. A chat window gives you an answer to copy. Claude Code does the job, saves the result and can do it again tomorrow.
For a marketer, two features matter most. The first is CLAUDE.md, a plain-text file that Claude reads at the start of every session. You write there what you would otherwise explain again and again. The second is skills: a SKILL.md file with instructions for one job, which you call with a slash command or which Claude loads when the job comes up.
My agents are mostly folders of plain-English rules, plus small scripts Claude wrote to read a sheet or save a draft. In July I wrote on LinkedIn that the 8 systems I listed then each took a single evening in Claude Code, with zero lines of code from me.
What Can Claude Code Do for Marketing? Our 9 Agents
Claude Code can run nine marketing and sales jobs at an agency, from drafting posts to writing a new client's call script. Here is our map, in the order a lead meets it. The last column is my own judgment from running them: the first thing that goes wrong when the input is bad. That column matters most, because every agent is only as good as what you feed it.
| # | Agent | What it does | What it starts from | What breaks first (my judgment) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Content | Drafts 5 LinkedIn posts a week. I edit and approve each one on WhatsApp. | Topic sources and my past posts | The voice turns generic when it reads no real posts of mine |
| 2 | Blog | Turns each LinkedIn post into an article on our website. The post says a week later. Since September 29 it runs the same day. | Today's post and live keyword data | A thin article when the post has no clear thesis |
| 3 | Lists | Finds decision makers on Clay and never pulls the same person twice. | The client's ideal buyer from onboarding and the history of past pulls | Duplicates when the history of past pulls is missing |
| 4 | Outreach | Reads a lead's posts and company news, then writes the LinkedIn DM. | The lead's profile, recent posts and news | A generic opener when the lead never posts |
| 5 | Email check | Scores every cold email like a spam filter before it goes out. | The draft and the sending domain | A good score on a bad list still gets no replies |
| 6 | Cold calls | Turns our callers' voice notes into next steps. | Voice notes and the call sheet | Vague next steps when the notes are vague |
| 7 | Recaps | Drafts the follow-up email when the sales call notes are ready. | The call notes | Wrong numbers when the notes are wrong, so it stops at a draft |
| 8 | Pipeline | At 7:50 every morning, tells me which deals need me today. | The CRM and the last touchpoint on each deal | Wrong priorities when the CRM is stale |
| 9 | Onboarding | Writes a new client's cold call script from their onboarding form. | Form answers and the client's website | Weak scripts from badly filled forms, so it flags the gaps |
None of these is a big platform. Each one is a narrow job that a junior person used to do by hand. And they chain: content feeds the blog, lists feed outreach, and call notes feed the recap and the pipeline briefing.
Outside outbound, the same pattern works for SEO briefs, ad copy and weekly reports. Anthropic's growth marketer uses Claude Code to write Google Ads copy and to make ad variations in Figma. Our SEO example is the blog agent: it checks live keyword demand and reads the top results before it writes the draft.
If you want the sales side of this map in more depth, my guide to AI sales automation workflows compares eight of them by input, review effort and failure cost.
Where Do Humans Stay in the Loop?
In our agency, any Claude Code agent that speaks to a client or spends money waits for a person. Anything that only reads can run alone. I approve every LinkedIn post on WhatsApp before it goes out. The recap agent never sends: it saves a draft and I press send myself. I confirm the size of a lead list before it spends data credits.
The morning pipeline briefing writes only to me. The email check runs before any cold email leaves. The blog agent is the one exception that publishes alone. It has to pass a hostile review first. A second agent scores the draft, and below 9 out of 10 nothing goes live. And when any agent gets something wrong, the correction becomes a new line in its rules file.
For how we split the work so the agents do not step on each other, see my notes on managing multiple AI agents.
What Tools Can Claude Code Connect To for Marketing?
Claude Code connects to marketing tools through MCP servers and APIs, so an agent can read your CRM, analytics or ad account directly. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI tools to outside data. Anthropic's docs give Google Drive, Jira and Slack as examples.
Our agents work the same way. The morning briefing reads the CRM, email and WhatsApp. The list agent works inside Clay. The blog agent checks Google Ads Keyword Planner before it writes a word. The rule from the previous section still applies: reading can run alone, and anything that writes to a person needs approval.
Do You Need to Know How to Code to Use Claude Code for Marketing?
You do not need to code to use Claude Code for marketing. You need to describe a job precisely and know what a good result looks like. I studied philosophy and have no engineering background. Anthropic tells a similar story about Austin Lau, a growth marketer who had to search how to open a terminal. A week later he had built two workflows for ad creative and Google Ads copy.
What you do need is patience with the first hour. Ask Claude Code to explain anything you do not understand. The real skill is one marketers already have: knowing the buyer, the message and the bar for quality, and writing it down.
Here is the start I would give a marketer who has never opened a terminal. Keep the first job this small.
- Install the Claude desktop app, sign in and open the Code tab.
- Pick one small job you do every week and describe it in plain English.
- When the result is right, ask Claude to save the steps as a skill in a SKILL.md file.
How Do You Write Marketing Rules in Plain English?
Write rules the way you would brief a new hire on day one: what to read first, what to produce, what never to do, and when to stop and ask. Short sentences beat clever prompts. Here is a template in the shape of our recap agent's rules, which you can copy into a SKILL.md file and adapt.
- Read the call notes first. Use only names, numbers and dates that appear in them.
- Write in my voice: short sentences, first person, no buzzwords, no exclamation marks.
- Open with the one problem the prospect cared about most.
- List the next steps, each with an owner and a date.
- Never send the email. Save a draft and tell me where it is.
- If the notes are missing or unclear, stop and ask me instead of guessing.
Rule 5 and rule 6 do most of the work. One limits the damage, the other stops the agent from filling gaps with invented facts. Anthropic's own docs warn that Claude treats CLAUDE.md as guidance. A hard block needs a hook, a small script that stops the action. So for anything that would really hurt, such as sending or deleting, add a technical block on top of the sentence.
Which Claude Code Marketing Agent Should You Build First?
Build first the agent whose input already exists, whose mistakes are cheap and whose job you do every week. For most teams that is the call recap or a morning pipeline briefing. Both work on notes and data you already have, both stop before anything reaches a client, and both are quick to test.
Build outreach last. It touches buyers, it needs good lists and good research, and a bad message costs you a prospect. If you sell to other businesses, the list agent is the second build, because every later agent depends on who is on that list.
For the list step itself, my guide on how to build a B2B lead list covers the criteria we use before any outreach starts.
Is Claude Code Better Than Claude Chat or ChatGPT for Marketing Work?
For one-off writing, a chat app is enough. For work that repeats every day or week, Claude Code is better, because it saves the rules, works on real files and can run on a schedule. Its docs list three ways to schedule work: in the cloud, in the desktop app and inside a session.
A chat reply is gone when you close the tab. A Claude Code agent wakes up at 7:50, reads the same rules, does the same job and leaves the result where you expect it.
If you are still choosing a subscription, my comparison of Claude vs ChatGPT for business covers plans and seats.
How Much Does Claude Code Cost for a Marketing Team?
Claude Code is included in all paid Claude plans and shares their usage limits. On October 2, 2026, Pro costs $17 a month with annual billing or $20 monthly. Max starts at $100 a month, with 5x or 20x the usage of Pro. Team Standard seats cost $20 a month billed annually, or $25 monthly.
For a marketer building a few agents, Pro is enough to start. Several agents running every day can hit the limits, which is why heavy users move to Max. For very big jobs you can also pay per use through the API.
My guide to Claude Max usage limits explains how the five-hour and weekly windows work.
What Are the Limits of Claude Code for Marketing?
Claude Code does not know your market. It knows what you write down. If your ideal buyer is vague in your head, it will be vague in the rules, and every agent downstream will inherit it. Bad data has the same effect: an old CRM gives you a confident briefing about the wrong deals. Give each agent access only to the tools it needs.
The other limit is maintenance. Agents that log into other tools break when a login expires or a page changes. It happened on the day I published this article. Our social scheduler login had expired, so the blog agent used a second route to read the day's post. Plan time every week for fixes, and give every agent a clear fallback or a clear stop.
Would you rather have agents like these inside a real outbound motion without building them? That is the work of our B2B lead generation service.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Code good for marketing agencies?
Yes, if the agency has repeatable work: lists, outreach research, recaps, reports and onboarding. Each client job becomes a skill with its own rules. We run our GTM agency on 9 such agents. The gain is consistency across clients, as long as a person still approves anything that reaches a buyer.
Can Claude Code replace a marketing team?
No. It replaces the repetitive parts of a marketing job: first drafts, data pulls, checks and summaries. It does not replace judgment about the buyer, the offer or the message. In our agency people still approve posts, send emails and own every client conversation. The agents give that time back.
What are the best Claude Code skills for marketing?
The best skills are the ones you write for your own repeated jobs. Good first candidates are a call recap writer, a morning pipeline briefing, a lead list builder and a cold email checker. Public libraries such as coreyhaines31/marketingskills on GitHub are useful examples, but your rules about buyer and voice are what make the output yours.
Do I need to use the terminal to use Claude Code?
No. Claude Code runs in the terminal, in IDEs like VS Code, in a desktop app for macOS and Windows, and on the web. Most surfaces need a paid Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account. The desktop app is the gentlest start for a marketer who has never opened a terminal.
How long does it take to build a marketing agent with Claude Code?
A narrow agent takes an evening. The 8 systems I listed in July took one evening each, and Anthropic's growth marketer built a Figma plugin in about an hour. The longer part is the following weeks, when you correct the outputs and turn each correction into a rule.
