Answer Engine OptimizationAEO
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that answer engines, such as Google featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants, ChatGPT and Perplexity, can pull a direct answer from it. It puts a clear, short answer right after each question, then adds the detail, so both people and machines get the answer fast.
How answer engines choose an answer
An answer engine does not want a page. It wants the passage that answers the question best. It looks for text that matches the question closely, makes sense on its own without the rest of the page, and comes from a source it has reason to trust. A precise answer near the top is far easier to lift than a better idea buried deep in the page.
Original, sourced facts make the strongest answers. Ask what share of booked B2B meetings actually take place, and a page with one dated, sourced number is easy to quote:
The study page then explains how the number was measured and what it does not cover. The answer engine quotes the number, and the reader who clicks through finds the method behind it.
Match the answer format to the question
| Question type | Best answer format | Example |
|---|---|---|
| What is ... | A definition of two or three sentences | What is DMARC |
| How to ... | Numbered steps | How to set up DKIM |
| X vs Y | A comparison table | SPF vs DKIM vs DMARC |
| How much ... | A number with its source and date | Claude API cost per request |
| Why ... | A direct reason, then the evidence | Why emails go to spam |
This glossary follows the same pattern: every entry opens with a definition that stands alone, explains with steps, tables and examples, and ends with the questions people ask next.
How to do answer engine optimization
- Collect real questions from sales calls, support tickets, People Also Ask boxes and the prompts buyers type into AI assistants.
- Turn each question into a heading, worded the way people ask it.
- Answer it in the first sentence or two under the heading, starting with the term itself.
- Follow with the detail: steps, a table, a formula or an example with numbers and a source.
- Add a short FAQ for the follow-up questions.
- Add structured data (schema.org labels such as Article, FAQPage and Organization) so machines can read what the page contains.
- Update facts and dates when they change, and show the date on the page.
To track results, search your target questions and ask the main AI assistants the same questions on a schedule. Log whether your passage is the one shown or cited, and rewrite the answers that lose to a competitor's.
Answer engine optimization vs GEO
The terms overlap. AEO grew up around featured snippets and voice search, where one answer is read out or shown above the results. Generative engine optimization (GEO) covers AI assistants that write a new answer from several sources and cite them. On the page, the work is the same: clear answers, clean structure and facts with sources. GEO adds the work beyond your own site, such as earning mentions across the web.
Precise definitions help with both. When we define meetings, qualified opportunities and pipeline in our B2B outbound evidence standard, answer engines get one unambiguous meaning to quote. Our resources hub applies the same approach to every study and guide.
