Cold Calling
Cold calling is the practice of phoning a potential customer who has had no earlier contact with the seller, to start a sales conversation. In B2B, cold calling usually targets a named decision maker at a company that fits the ideal customer profile, and the goal of the call is a qualified meeting, not a sale on the spot.
How a B2B cold call works
A good cold call is short, prepared and about the buyer. The caller is not trying to sell the product on the phone. The caller is trying to find out whether a problem exists and whether a meeting would help.
- Before dialing, research the account and find one reason to call now, such as a new leader, a funding round or a new office.
- Open by saying who you are and why you are calling, in the first few seconds.
- Ask one question about a problem the buyer probably has, then listen.
- Qualify: does the company fit, and is this the person who owns the problem?
- Ask for a meeting at a specific time in the next few working days.
- After the call, log a summary, send the promised follow-up email and update the CRM.
The last step is where AI helps most today. A person does the talking, and AI writes the summary, the follow-up and the CRM update, as our AI cold calling guide explains.
Is cold calling still effective in B2B?
Cold calling still books meetings with senior buyers who rarely answer email. The question is whether those meetings happen and whether they are with the right people. Our study of 1,380 B2B sales meetings booked by cold calling for 25 clients, from September 2024 to September 2026, tracked every one to its outcome.
In the same study, 92.9% of held meetings were with prospects matching the client's target profile, and 23% of meetings with a known job title were with a CEO, founder or owner. Calls reach decision makers when the list is built well.
The phone also gives the fastest feedback in outbound. Every conversation tells you which objections come up and which words buyers use for their problem, and that improves the emails and LinkedIn messages that follow.
Cold calling with AI voices: the US rules
Under US telemarketing rules, an AI-generated voice counts as an artificial voice. An AI voice agent that cold calls a mobile number for telemarketing therefore needs the prospect's prior express written consent, which a cold call by definition does not have. A live human caller is not an artificial voice, but Do Not Call lists and state telemarketing laws can still apply. This is general information, not legal advice, so check with a lawyer before you launch, and check local rules before calling into Europe.
How to turn cold calls into meetings that take place
The gap between the call and the meeting date matters more than most teams expect. These figures come from the Growth Cab show rate study.
| Days from booking to meeting | Meetings that took place |
|---|---|
| 0 to 2 days | 85.4% |
| 3 to 7 days | 77.6% |
| 8 to 14 days | 70.1% |
| 15 to 30 days | 60.3% |
| More than 30 days | 58.5% |
